Morning Glory Pool is a famous hot spring located in Yellowstone National Park, renowned for its vibrant colors, which resemble the shape and hues of the morning glory flower. The pool is situated in the Upper Geyser Basin, near the Old Faithful geyser, and has been one of the park's most photographed geothermal features.

Appearance and Colors

The pool’s most striking characteristic is its range of colors. Historically, it was primarily a deep blue, due to the presence of thermophilic bacteria and the water’s extreme heat. However, over time, the color has shifted, now featuring yellows, greens, and oranges around the edges. This change is the result of the cooling of the water and the introduction of debris and foreign objects thrown in by visitors, which altered the spring’s ecosystem. The cooler temperatures allow different species of heat-loving microorganisms (thermophiles) to thrive, each contributing to the pool’s color variations.

History

The pool was named in 1883 by the wife of an assistant park superintendent, who admired its resemblance to the morning glory flower. Over the years, human interference has greatly impacted the pool's condition. Tourists tossing coins, trash, and rocks into the pool clogged its natural vent, reducing water circulation and cooling the spring. As a result, Morning Glory Pool’s once clear blue hue has faded, and the orange and green thermophiles have taken over.

In response to these changes, park rangers have periodically attempted to remove the debris and restore the pool’s original flow, but the damage has been significant. The park has since put up educational signs near the pool to encourage visitors to refrain from throwing objects into it, helping to preserve its beauty.

Morning Glory Pool continues to be a symbol of both the beauty and fragility of Yellowstone's geothermal features, reflecting the ongoing impact of human activity on natural wonders.
